What made you choose dentistry?
My mom. I had an aptitude for science, and an interest in kinesiology, psychology, and health. I considered medical school and physical therapy. My mother encouraged me to get to know our neighbor, who was a dentist, and observe his practice. When he did some esthetic work on my broken front tooth, it improved not only my smile, but my self-esteem. After that appointment, I was sold on dentistry as a profession. Thanks, mom!
What do you love most about being a dentist or what do you find the most rewarding?
I love a job well done. Each appointment has an interpersonal component, a technical skill, and an aspect of teamwork. As a former gymnast, I love nailing each section of the routine. When the patient thanks us and compliments our ability after a procedure; that is us sticking the landing.
What’s your care/treatment philosophy?
Treat every patient with respect and care. Find the language that they speak (linguistically and emotionally) and aim there. Whether it’s elevated confidence, professionalism, humor, or gentle reassurance, find what eases their concern and provide that. Make them a part of the team that is working together to manage their dental condition. Minimize or eliminate any experience of pain.
Is there a particular area of dentistry you enjoy the most or like to focus on?
Extractions and sleep apnea treatments. The mechanical nature of these well-defined procedures relies on my strengths, while hiding my inability to multi-task! Also, the removal of an infected tooth and the treatment of sleep apnea are some of the more impactful treatments we can perform in dentistry, which is rewarding.
When did you start or how many years have you been with Park Dental?
I’ve been practicing with Park Dental for over 10 years. I’ve worked in some surgical capacity at 5 locations alongside excellent doctors and team members.
What is one thing you love most about Park Dental?
The group is doctor-owned.
What do you enjoy most about being part of a group practice?
At first, it was the collaboration. When you are starting out, it’s great to have mentors and colleagues who can help with problem-solving. Then as you establish your practice, you can develop a network of providers who lean on each other’s strengths to provide great patient care. At this point in my career, nearing my 50’s, I most enjoy the dad jokes in the doctor’s office, and donuts on Fridays.
And now, let’s get to know Dr. Rinaldi on a more personal level!
What was your very first job?
Growing up in Iowa, my first paid job was de-tasseling corn stalks. It was a miserable right-of-passage undertaken in the worst conditions during the summertime when a kid was meant to be sleeping, playing video games, or swimming.
What do you like to do on your days off?
Breakfast by myself at the local diner, then perform some productive task like lawn mowing. Play some catch or basketball, or go swimming at the lake with my sons. Weightlifting or mountain biking before getting cleaned up for family dinner at the dining room table. Capped off with some video gaming before bed sounds like a wonderful day!
Who is your hero or who inspires you?
My friend Mike is a pediatric cardiologist in Virginia. He performed a procedure to close a hole in my son’s heart that has enabled him to more fully engage in life and sports. Mike has always excelled in his areas of interest. I have put my life in his hands during our adventures rock climbing, and put my son’s life in his hands for the surgery. No question, it’s Mike.
What is an interesting fact that people may not know about you?
I was a state and regional all-around champion in gymnastics. I was invited to training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Any success I’ve had in life, I credit to the hard work and pursuit of excellence that is gymnastics.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Anywhere with my wife. She is the best travel companion and always has fun ideas about what to do.
What’s your favorite movie?
Three-way tie: Tombstone, The Shawshank Redemption, and Fight Club.
Are you scared of or have a fear of anything?
The phrase: “What should we have for dinner?”
What’s your favorite thing about living in Minnesota/Wisconsin?
Living near my wife’s family.
