Can I Enjoy State Fair Food and Keep My Teeth Healthy?

Park Dental Coon Rapids

The great Minnesota has begun! Full of fun-filled rides, delicious food, and homegrown entertainment. With all that fun in mind, the last thing we consider is how our oral health can be impacted by the delicious state fair food. As part of our ask a doctor series, we asked Dr. Mark Severt, a dentist at our Park Dental Coon Rapids practice, “If I indulge in my favorite treats at the State Fair, do I need to worry about my oral health?”

Dr. Severt said, “If the fair were every week or even *gasp* every day, I would avoid the sodas and the taffy and all the deep-fried goodness of an Oreo cookie. The great news is that if you go to the fair only a couple of times a year, it does not matter in the slightest what it is you eat! Go have your breaded and deep-fried whatnots and your candied thingies on a stick. Leave your dental and calorie worries at the gate.” Dr. Severt also added that the things that give most people dental issues are the daily acidic drinks, not the once-a-year indulgences. He encourages you to grab a toothbrush and some floss when you get home before the post fair exhaustion nap sneaks up on you.

For a little fun, we asked Dr. Severt what his state fair traditions are!

“The first Monday of the fair, my family and I hop on our bikes for an early day. I love the sounds and smells of the fair in the early morning! A ride on the chair lift, a malt from the dairy building and some great people watching are my highlights! Enjoy the great Minnesota get together!”

We hope you check out the state fair and all the unique activities it has to offer. Just be sure to keep your oral health in mind so you can leave with great memories and a healthy smile. If you would like to learn more about Dr. Mark Severt and request an appointment, click here.
