All-Star Tips to Protect Your Smile While Playing Sports
November 07, 2022According to a 2020 survey by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, 54% of children ages 6 to 17 participated in sports during the previous 12 months. Playing sports is a great way for kids to get exercise, socialize with their peers and learn important skills. However, as much fun as a new sport may be for your little one, young athletes are at a higher risk for sports-related injuries, including dental injuries. In fact, dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury (injury to the mouth or face) sustained while participating in sports. And the majority of these dental injuries are preventable with the proper equipment and preparation. We have compiled some of our all-star dental tips below to keep your child’s smile in tip top shape while participating in the activities they love.
Always Wear a Mouthguard Ready-made and boil-and-bite mouthguards are available at retail stores. For a better fit, ask your dentist for a custom mouthguard. |
Clean Your Teeth and Mouthguards Before and after wearing mouthgaurds, kids should brush their teeth and wash their mouthguards. This will help prevent the build up of bacteria that could cause bad breath, decay or even an infection. |
Hydrate with Water Stay hydrated by drinking water instead of sports drinks. Many sports drinks are high in sugar and acid which can cause cavities. |
Fuel Up Like a Pro For sustained energy, choose carbohydrates such as whole-grain breads, vegetables, fruits, beans and legumes. Don’t forget high-protein foods like chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, dairy and nuts. |
Be Prepared for an Injury One third of all dental injuries are caused by athletic activities.* Be prepared for this worst-case scenario by knowing where to go, what number to call and how your insurance plan covers dental emergencies. |
